Is it necessary to have played Halo and Halo 2 to understand what happens in Halo 3?

I’ve never played the campaigns of Halo and Halo 2 but I want to get Halo 3. I was wondering about the storyline and if I needed to play the first 2 campaigns to fully appreciate what happens in Halo 3.
